Exhibit by Aberson is pleased to present a selection of new works from Bill Claps opening November 9th from 6 until 8 PM at Exhibit by Aberson located at 3524B S Peoria Avenue, Tulsa OK 74105.

Claps studied painting and drawing at the Art Students League in New York and in Florence, Italy. His paintings and drawings have been presented in solo and group exhibitions in galleries and institutions of the United States and Europe and Saudi Arabia. Multiple works are held in private collections and foundations throughout the United States and Europe.
Drawing and painting in immediate and gestural styles, Claps sees drawing as a form of exercise, keeping him in shape creatively. He has found that drawing regularly is another form of meditation that keeps the ideas flowing and the mind open.
Meditation is an integral component of the art practice. Clarity derived from spending the time to focus on meditation subverts the need for inspiration and rather highlights the ideas that are most immediately present and most valuable to develop. In this process, Claps has found his technique for shaping his bodies of work. Through collecting photographs, editing and drawing them, culling and living with them, he sees connections between the imagery that has formed his artistic voice.

Claps applies metallic foils to these curated photographic prints using a heat process that causes the chemicals in the print to react to the foil. The foil adheres to the surface of the print in varying intensities producing an original monoprint each time. The exhibition features work from the “Natural Abstractions” as well as the “It’s All Derivative” series demonstrating this unique process.

The “It’s All Derivative” series reflects Claps’ view of art history, utilizing appropriated imagery from contemporary art of the past and incorporate language and Morse code. The “Natural Abstractions” works include photographs of landscapes and foliage influenced by nature motifs. These works integrate his visual commentary referencing the influential style of 19th-century Japanese prints.

Bill Claps lives and works in New York City as a visual artist, filmmaker and writer. Born in Glen Ridge, New Jersey, he earned a Bachelor of Arts at Harvard University, where he studied painting and art history.
